Summer is here, and we hope you’re loving every minute of it. As you enjoy these warmer months, you probably want to look your best for whatever occasions or events you attend. When you don’t have the luxury of layers to add depth, you have to get creative with jewelry and accessories, all while complementing your outfit and hair. It’s a balance, but it’s certainly doable.
How to Style Hair with Jewelry
Before we get too into the weeds with outfits, let’s talk jewelry. Generally, the idea here is you want proportionality. That’s sort of just how all fashion is, really. Anyway, the general idea is that you never want your hair to overshadow or hide your jewelry if you’re trying to make it a focal point.
For example, if you have a piece of everyday jewelry you love, you want it to be seen. A bold set of earrings is going to be best paired with hair up and out of your face. Something like pendant earrings works really well with your hair up. However, if you want your hair down, consider a bolder necklace that sits closer to your neck.
This is something you’re just going to want to play around with, but you get the general idea. You want to fill in any visual empty space, which is why long necklaces are recommended for low necklines and short necklaces are recommended for higher ones, for example.
Pairing Your Jewelry to Your Summer Outfit
Less Is More
We always say this when it comes to summer outfits because, well, it’s true. You have fewer layers and likely a slightly less complex outfit overall in the summer. That’s certainly not a bad thing. It’s just a part of the season. So, it’s easier to overwhelm a simple summer outfit with a lot of jewelry. Consider stacked wedding rings, for example, as a great way to balance adding dimension to an outfit without being too overwhelming.
Match Your Skin Tone
Sometimes contrast is fun with jewelry; other times, you want to go more muted. Summer is the perfect time to complement tan skin with subtle rose gold or gold pieces. And while you can totally rock silver jewelry, rose gold and gold will add just the right amount of sparkle and shine to your summer wardrobe.
What’s Your Neckline?
As we mentioned earlier, you want your jewelry to complement your neckline. Lower neckline, lower necklace. High neckline? You guessed it — a choker necklace will do the trick. Once you’ve determined that, decide whether you want to go with a bold statement piece or something to blend in, and you’re good to go.
Pick a Statement Piece
In the colder months, you may be able to pull off a couple of bold pieces in an outfit with greater dimensions. Even then, it’s a maybe. In the summer months, you’re better off just picking one thing and making that the center of attention. If you’re still figuring out how to mix and match jewelry, this will take some of the guesswork and stress out as well.
Don’t Forget Cool Colors
We mean cool in the literal sense, though technically, both apply. While you might lean towards reds and oranges in the summer, blues are some of the most underappreciated colors in the summer. They’re super valuable as accent pieces, and any sort of blue gem or piece of jewelry is going to pop. Don’t have blue jewelry? No worries! Go the inverse route. Put together an outfit focused on a blue hue and go with classic gold jewelry to complement.
Balance Jewelry and Patterns
This is a really good year-round tip, but especially relevant in the summer. If you’re going with some cool, funky patterns in your outfit, keep your jewelry reserved. Bold patterns favor muted jewelry, and vice versa. Want to go all out on your jewelry? Keep the outfit simple and let your statement pieces do the work to prevent the two from competing with each other.
Don’t Be Afraid to Try New Things
We’ve given you plenty of tools to get you started. Now it’s on you! If you’re unsure, ask a stylish friend. If you don’t have any, you better figure this out so you can be the stylish friend who offers advice. Either way, this whole thing is a process of trial and error.
If you know the rules of fashion, you can break them artistically. However, as you’re starting out, don’t feel pressure to break the rules just yet. Once you understand the rules, you can break them to your heart’s content, though. We can’t wait to see what you come up with!
